Gender vs. Eating Disorders More women worry about their weight than men. It is a fact that among the adults, 38% of the women and 24% of the men were trying to lose weight. When you hear about Anorexia and Bulimia most people think of females. What people do not know is tons of males suffer from the same problem. I believe males should be more looked upon when it comes to this subject. Gymnasts, runners, body builders, rowers, wrestlers, racers, dancers, and swimmers are especially helpless against dietary problems on the grounds that their games require weight limitation. Approximately 10% of eating disordered individuals coming to the attention of mental health professionals were male, and Eating disorders do not discriminate on the basis of gender. Men can and do develop eating disorders. Anorexia is a loss or a lack of appetite for food. Bulimia is over eating and can follow with vomiting or fasting. Bulimia comes with a lot of emotional issues too. Some people refer to Anorexia and bulimia as â€Å"women diseases.† These two medical conditions are more commonly seen in women, but that does not mean men do not suffer greatly. Research was taken and they found these cases affected seven million women and only one million men. It is actually a fact it is more dangerous for men to develop an eating disorder than women. The reason for this is because men will get down to the lowest weight and begin to lose valuable muscle and tissues. He doesn’t donate millions of dollars to charity for a tax break or to get his name on the front page of a newspaper, but when he sees a man in need he offers the coat from his back and continue on. So what makes a hero, heroic? Well what is a hero? Words such as brave, fearless, strong-minded, tough, and being a leader come to mind. So does my everyday hero line up to your average super hero? Yes! The average American has to be brave to face an economic recession such as todays. Does he have courage? One would have to assume to face the daunting task of raising children as a single parent. Doing what ever it takes to get there kids the proper education to become a successful American. If anyone is determined it’s this individual. It takes a lot out of someone to give all they got and seem like no improvement is being made. The determined American has to push on to brighter skies. As a father my hero can’t show anything less than strength because when a father is weak there is no hope for the children to feel empowered. This also ties in to the idea of my hero being a leader. He has to be and he is. I think he qualifies as a hero, don’t you? Superman never put food on your table nor did the Hulk, so why are they the heroes and not you and I? Its human nature to assume a hero has to be larger-than-life. Usually this is true but then we tend to neglect the thousands of â€Å"mini-heroes† we have representing great heroic qualities. Even on those brutal mornings when my alarm clock would ring before I even had a chance to close my eyes, I would march off to school, exhausted but determined. The same goes for swim meets and softball games. Being absent is simply not an option. Whether I am squatting behind the batter, ready to pounce on any foul balls, or poised in center field, ready to defy the blinding sun and keep my eye on all fly balls, or coiled up on the starting block, ready to release my body into a bullet of kinetic energy, this is where I belong after school. These are the moments of joy in my childhood. The real relationships I have built with teachers, classmates, teammates, and coaches are worth more than any staged familial bond in an American Express advertisement. No one will pay me thousands of dollars to engage in class every day without fail, hit a walk-off home run against a rival team, or get a personal best time in the 50-meter freestyle. But that is where this 17-year-old girl gets her richest rewards. That is what puts a smile on my face, a real smile that I would not trade for a paycheck or an acting career. I am happy to be a student. I am excited to be a center fielder and a catcher. I am elated to be a swimmer. Some day soon, when I have to turn around and wave good-bye to all this, there will be real tears streaming down my face. But the laughter, friendships, and memories will be worth it.
